I know, confusing right?! They even have different color spines! There are US trade paperback size (larger format), US mass market size (smaller format), and Canadian paperback size (which are larger than both US editions). My Canadian editions, UK editions, and US editions are all slightly different from one another. If you’re purchasing them through online discount retailers (ie: Amazon or Book Depository), then you might unknowingly be purchasing editions that have been printed by different publishers in different countries. The answer to this question will depend on where you’re purchasing your books! If you’re buying your books through your local independent bookseller, then your books are probably all the same size with lovely matching covers and spines. ![]() ![]() ![]() I loved her story in the third book, but her storyline didn’t intersect with any of the other characters’ stories, so I was wondering where Maas was going with this one. Manon was introduced as a new character in Heir of Fire. Her character hasn’t changed completely, but I could see she was a different person to the Celaena we saw in Throne of Glass, and we get to see her become the queen she is. ![]() Our protagonist grew a lot in Heir of Fire, and now she finally seems to have transformed into Aelin. This book brings the story full circle, as she finally confronts her past with Arobynn. ![]() While I enjoyed the training sequences, I so loved seeing her in Rifthold in Queen of Shadows, back where everything started. In Heir of Fire, Celaena was away in Wenlyn learning to use her magic. It brought together all the threads that Maas has been weaving for the previous three books and, well, it was pretty epic. Queen of Shadows is the fourth book in the Throne of Glass series and the best instalment I’ve read so far. *This review will be spoiler-free for Queen of Shadows but may include spoilers for the previous books in the series* ![]() ![]() I’m so excited about the new crop of series blooming up with strong diverse girl characters! I especially love that while culture is an important aspect of the stories, it is not the main thread of the plot. There are NO OTHER Japanese American book series for kids! Her series is not only authentic but has a spunky girl character that reminds me of Ramona and Clementine. I had already heard of her new Japanese American early chapter book series, Jasmine Toguchi, and made a point of telling her how excited I am for it. I met her at Andrea Wang’s The Nian Monster author event at Newtonville Books last January. ![]() Please welcome my guest author today, Debbi Michiko Florence. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She writes about her journey with her illness like Joan Didion writes about losing her husband and daughter one after the other, but the problem with that is Wang doesn’t give us the painstakingly introspective look into her mind during her experiences that Didion does. I know all these things, yet while reading The Collected Schizophrenias I couldn’t stop wishing that she would stop working so hard to portray herself as tough and composed and embrace the vulnerability she felt during her horrific experiences with hallucinations and involuntary hospitalization. She has had to make herself appear well and stable to keep people from righting her off as crazy. She has been misdiagnosed (as bipolar before her psychologist diagnosed her as schizoaffective in a flippant email), and then diagnosed with a condition that many doctors consider unverifiable (late-stage Lyme disease). Wang’s illness has rendered her unreliable emotionally and mentally in the eyes of most people her entire life. But yet I feel guilty for this quality of her writing bothering me as much as it did. My main issue with The Collected Schizophrenias was Esmé Weijun Wang’s reliance of putting on a tough and unemotional front while recounting her horrifying experiences with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type. ![]() ![]() Then, in December, a book gift exchange happened and viola! Here it was, in my living room! The synopsis seemed interesting so onto the wish list it went. Why “THIS” book? At some point in the last year or so I did a google search for “lesbian novels” and saw this one on one of the lists that came up. I like to start off with the T in my ASPECT method. ![]() Key themes of the book include transition from youth to adulthood, complex family relationships, same-sex relationships, organised religion and the concept of faith. It is a coming-of-age story about a lesbian girl who grows up in an English Pentecostal community. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a novel by Jeanette Winterson published in 1985 by Pandora Press. ![]() I intend to use the ASPECT method for my discussion and will not spoil the ending. This is my review for Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. ![]() ![]() ![]() Isabel liked this café, where the display windows of the shop it had once been had now been made into sitting areas for customers. ![]() From that point in the street, one could see in the distance the hills of Fife beyond: dark-green hills in that light, but at times an attenuated blue, softened by the sea-always changing. She was sitting in the window of the Glass and Thompson café at the top of Dundas Street-where it descended sharply down the hill to Canonmills. Isabel adjusted the position of her chair. But between such curiosity, which is permissible, and nosiness, which is not, there lies a dividing line that some people simply miss-even if it is a line that is painted red and marked by the very clearest of warning signs. To take an interest in the affairs of others is entirely natural so natural, in fact, that even a cat, lying cat-napping on top of a wall, will watch with half an eye the people walking by below. ![]() ![]() His personal diary and other works, including the novel, were confiscated because of their provocative character. This fear turned out to be well-founded: in attendance at the novel's debut was an informant for the Russian state, and after the reading, Bulgakov’s flat was searched. Though he had held a similar event the previous year to introduce his novel The Fatal Eggs, he was worried that his sharp satire of the Soviet state could lead to his arrest or worse at the hands of the authorities. Written when Bulgakov was 33 years old, it was first introduced to the public in March 1925 in a Moscow apartment with a gathering of approximately 50 contemporary intellectuals. ![]() ![]() ![]() Heart of a Dog is one of the best examples of Bulgakov's criticisms of life in the Soviet Union. ![]() ![]() ![]() These are some other subs that you might find interesting :Īll design work seems to have three common traits: there is a message to the work, the tone of that message, and the format that the work takes.
